The first six months in Prescott went well; I was happy. One day, when leaving the apartment with Alice, I said, “Hang on, I need to lock the doors.”
Alice laughed, “What the fuck are you doing?”
I raised an eyebrow. “What? I’m locking up the house.”
Alice laughed harder. “Dude, you’re not in Baltimore anymore. Haven’t you noticed that there’s no crime here?”
The first few days passed quickly, busied with cable installation, furniture deliveries, and writing papers. The absence of crime, sirens, and loud people on the street went unnoticed, and for the first time in many years, the windows remained open when I left home. Everywhere we went, the townsfolk's niceness surprised me. People said hello to one another on the street. People working in stores seemed to mean it when they said, “Thank you, please, and have a nice day!” Opposite of Baltimore in every way, I felt lucky to live in this town.
