If Christianity was really about Christ’s ability to love the fat, ugly, unwashed people as much as he loved runway models and movie stars — his love for mankind being pure and absolute, as he is presented in brief glimpses in the Bible’s book of Mathew and in J.D. Salinger’s best works, (A Perfect Day for Bananafish and Franny and Zoey). If only Christianity was based in that Christ, a being of perfect compassion — if HE was the Guy that the evangelicals et al followed, I’d jump in line and enjoy the rest of my life waiting for my big payday coming when I died.
