Again, according to Ernest Becker in his book The Denial of Death, he hypothesizes that virtually everything we do psychologically is part of an “Immortality Project,” an effort to convince ourselves that we can avoid dying and becoming personally extinct: Jesus worship, publishing an award-winning book, seeing your photo hung in the back hallway of the place you worked for 30 years. And, of course, posting our heartbreaking works of staggering genius.
