Emily Wahhsted is the mother of Zach Wahhsted, a kid who was in the coffee shop the day we tried to rob it, a kid who probably saved our lives. But Zach ended his own life, by suicide, a few months after that day, when everything seemed over and like all would be okay.
The bullet through my hand came from grabbing Zach and pulling him out of the line of fire when Joey and I were trying to escape. During that time in the coffee shop, when we were surrounded by the cops, I got to know Zach and understand him a little. When I heard about his death, I called his Mom to tell her how sorry I was and she asked me if I’d come to Zach’s funeral. Of course, I said yes. It was about a week before Joey’s and my trial and some people probably thought I was just sucking up to look good in court, but that’s not why I went. I went for Zach and for Emily. I went because it was the right thing to do.
