My evangelical on again-off again pal of 60+ years prefaced his next question with his typical denial that what he was about to say was exactly what it appeared to be, because it WAS that. He always does this, denying that he wants to talk about what he wants to give himself permission to discuss and knows I won’t want to listen to him.

In this case he was simply looking for an opening in our telephone visit to bring up his own anxieties and worries, as a Christian, about what God thinks about homosexuals.

“Do you think God approves of homosexuals?” he finally got around the spitting it out.
